While RIT does not accept every single applicant, it does have a very high admissions rate. RIT's admissions policy can be summed up as: let (almost) everyone in, and let them filter themselves out when they get here. RIT accepts a good deal of people who cannot handle the amount and difficulty of the work here. You hear a lot about the low retention rate here, but I can tell you from my own experience that it is mostly from academic problems and not dislike of the school. So even though you stand a good chance of being accepted, make sure you SHOULD be accepted before you bother coming here.

With that said, I personally did not have an outstanding high school record, and I was accepted into the Computer Science program. So I can tell you where I stood out and those aspects are probably the ones that will help you get in here. I had a low GPA but high SAT scores. I did poorly in social studies and english classes but well in science, math, and computer science classes.

Although I am not privy to the RIT admission policy, I would say SATs are probably the #1 factor used for admissions here. Every year the school brags about how this year's incoming freshman have the highest median SAT score of any year. That should tell you something.
